LOGO _ GO TO CISPUS HOME Cispus Core Competencies

Core competencies used in the workshop are based on the Cispus model (e.g., being ethical, process aggressive, productive, and for the good of the group).

Each participant will be exposed to four core competencies (CC) regardless of track selected:

1: ROLES.  Each participant should be able to identify and define the five roles found in any type of group setting (e.g., participant, decision maker, facilitator, recorder, and presenter).

2:  ANALYSIS AND PLANNING.  Each participant should be able to identify and understand the importance of key questions used to analyze and plan for any situation. They should learn which questions they need to ask when attempting to deal with an issue or solve a problem.  These questions are based on the Strategic Analysis Tool.  The key questions are:

1.      How can we define this issue or problem?
2.      What major points need to be addressed?
3.      Who needs to be involved?
4.      Who will the decision-maker be?
5.      How will we receive and share information?
6.      What is the background on this issue/problem?
7.      How will the group make decisions?
8.      What is the desired outcome and what tools and strategies will we need to reach it?
9.      What is the timeline?
10.  What is the worst-case scenario?
11.  How are you going to track or measure your progress?

3: SKILLS APPLICATION.  Each participant should learn skills and techniques that can be used to help a group deal with an issue or solve a problem in an orderly, efficient, and predictable manner.  Participants will learn:  facilitative behaviors, listening skills, problem solving techniques, discussion strategies, how to build a good agenda, define objectives, and establish ground rules.

4:  GETTING TO CLOSURE.  Each participant should learn more aggressive skills and techniques that can help bring a group to closure, agreement, and understanding.  Participants will learn:

1.  Documentation techniques for action plans/follow-up tasks, notes and agreements.
2.  Decision making techniques and the Cispus definition of consensus.
3.  How to get closure and then measure and evaluate the solution.
4.  How to back up gracefully at any point in the process.
