IAC Rechartering Update The charter for the Intergovernmental Advisory Committee has received most of the necessary Departmental signatures. Once all of the necessary signatures have been collected, the Secretary of Agriculture will sign the charter, and letters notifying IAC members of their selection will be sent. The renewal process should be complete by mid-March, 2003. |

Research and Publications -- A new science website was recently announced. This site, www.science.gov, is intended to connect the American public with U.S. Government science and technology. Fourteen scientific and technical information organizations from 10 major science agencies collaborated to make this site a reality. -- Late in 2002, a white paper was released summarizing a three-day workshop in November of 2001 on the development of old-growth Douglas-fir forests along the Pacific Coast of North America. This workshop was attended by 30 of the Region’s leading scientists and managers and covered topics such as regional diversity in old-growth, the role of fire, and approaches to management and restoration. Southwest Oregon Disturbance Ecology Workshop
3/11-3/13
– There will be a Southwestern Oregon Disturbance
Ecology Workshop, March 11-13, 2003 in Roseburg, Oregon. The registration
fee $120.00. The purpose of this workshop is threefold: 1) Understand how
we are and are not accommodating ecosystem change in our forest
management; 2) review disturbance ecology principles and historical
disturbance regimes; and 3) outline improvements that could be made in
federal forest management to better accommodate the dynamic nature of our

RIEC/IAC Meeting 4/1 – The next RIEC/IAC meeting is scheduled for April 1, 2003, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel, 1000 N.E. Multnomah Street in Portland. In addition, there will be an optional pre-brief for non-Federal IAC members from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the fourth floor conference room of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Regional Office, located in the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) Complex at 911 N.E. 11th Avenue in Portland.
