Subject:

Review of Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie Forest’s NFP Land Allocation modification

On June 29, 2001, I asked the Regional Ecosystem Office (REO) to facilitate a coordinated review by the Regional Interagency Executive Committee (RIEC) of a modification to a Northwest Forest Plan (NFP) land allocation on the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The modification allows for 2,340 acres of Late-Successional Reserves to be changed to an Administratively Withdrawn land allocation. This modification provides for management of approximately 630 of these acres as elk habitat forage openings to accommodate historical hunting interests of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe.

The REO has completed its work in response to my request and presented its recommended findings to the RIEC that the modification is consistent with the objectives of the NFP S&Gs. The RIEC concurred with the REO’s recommended findings on September 5, 2001, subject to being provided an opportunity to request minor revisions, in response to which adjustments have been made and are reflected in the enclosed memorandum dated September 13, 2001.

In closing, let me take this opportunity to commend you and your staff for their exemplary efforts in providing the information needed and coordinating with the REO during this review.
